,

Status: Completed

Period of implementation: 2021

Donor: European Union – 11th European Development Fund

Direct Beneficiary: Ministry of Health

Implementing Agency: ONAO, Ministry of Health

Donor Contribution: 160,000 EUR

Background:

At the height of the COVID-19 global pandemic, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda (GoAB) was faced with mounting cost and logistical challenges as it sought to adequately respond to the concurrent demand on the national health care services. In an attempt to find solutions for continued COVID-19 related medical and public health interventions, the GoAB approached its long-time development partner, the European Union (EU) for support in its emergency response efforts.

The EU was able to facilitate the Governments’ request by a reallocation of 160,000 Euro, previously approved for Antigua and Barbuda, but allocated to another sector within the context of the National Indicative Programme of the 11th European Development Fund (EDF).

Objective:

To provide emergency relief through the provision of essential medical equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Project description:

Working on behalf of the GoAB, the ONAO launched an international tender procedure to contract a supplier to provide critical COVID-19 medical supplies and equipment. The ONAO and Ministry of Health developed a priority list of medical supplies and equipment which formed the basis of the tender procedure.

The contracted supplier provided a 40ft container of supplies and equipment which included PPE, sanitizers, testing supplies and vital monitors. The Items were handed over to the Ministry of Health in July 2021 and subsequently commissioned.
