The Cotonou Agreement was signed between the European Union (EU) and 78 of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries in the year 2000. Its objective was to reduce and eventually eradicate poverty in those territories, and while contribute to the gradual integration of ACP countries into the world economy. Between the period 2000 to 2020, the Cotonou Agreement provided the overarching partnership framework for EU relations with the ACP countries, replacing the 1975 Lomé Convention. The three main elements covered by the partnership framework are development cooperation, economic and trade cooperation, and the political dimension.
